International football returns to the National Stadium Providence this evening and Guyanese are urged to don yellow apparel in support of the Golden Jaguars when they face off with their nemesis, Suriname, in a friendly
international affair that gets underway at 20:30hrs.
The Surinamese arrived in Guyana yesterday and almost immediately entertained the media in discourse at a press conference facilitated by the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) under the guidance of its Communications Officer, Deborah Francis.
She shared the head table with Coach of the Suriname team, Werner Blockson, Captain, Albert Nibte and team manager, Humphrey Dundas. The Guyanese entourage included Head Coach, Jamal Shabazz, Captain, Gregory ‘Jackie Chan’ Richardson, midfield player, Colin Nelson and Banks DIH Brand Manager (Banks Beer), Brian Choo-hen.
Mr. Dundas expressed delight on behalf of his players to have been invited to the country to showcase their wares and assured Guyanese that they will turn in good show. “We arrived today (yesterday) and are a bit tired but rest assured we will be refreshed for the game tomorrow (today),” he said. He noted that both countries have a rich history of classical football even as he promised fans a top class performance.
Mr. Blockson echoed those sentiments while explaining that the team compilation differed from the squad that last came to Guyana when the Surinamese prevailed over the locals 1-0. “Most of those players are currently on international duty in preparation for the Carib Cup in St Maarten but I can assure you that these players are all competent,” he assured. Mr. Blockson was less talkative and simply pronounced, “We are here to do our job; we are ready.”
Mr. Shabazz said that the locals will be turning in a good show even as he singled out his Captain, Richardson, for high praise. He admitted that he had had many face-ups with the talented striker but said that it was all towards the improvement of the team. “He’s demonstrated great leadership skills and that has made a big difference in the fortunes of the team before,” Mr. Shabazz said of Richardson. He also had high praise for midfielder, Colin Nelson, who he said has improved leaps and bounds. “Should he continue along this line I envisage him as the captain of the (national) squad in the near future,” expounded Shabazz.
Mr. Richardson said that the Guyanese squad is one of experience and skill and he views his role as one of support for the youngsters. “This game will be a good test for them and should inform us of the progress we’ve made so far,” said Richardson.
Mr. Nelson feels that the team is well balanced and should be able to hold its own against its opponents. “We have quite a formidable line up, the likes of (Devon) Millington, (Konata) Manning and (Dwight) Peters among others and I am sure that fans will be in for a special treat,” he exhorted.
Banks DIH Ltd are the sponsors of the match and Mr. Choo-Hen said that his company is delighted to once again offer its services towards the development of the sport. He envisaged a fun filled day and urged the fans to come out in their numbers, appropriately dressed in yellow, in support of the Jaguars. “I’d like to wish both teams all the best but as a patriotic Guyanese I am going to back my boys to win,” he concluded.
General admission is $1,500, while the special admission will cost $5,000.
