An excellent all-round performance by Sherfene Rutherford handed Demerara
Cricket Club a four-wicket victory over Georgetown Cricket Club in the final of the Georgetown Cricket Association/New Building Society second division 40-over tournament yesterday.
Rutherford claimed 2-49 as GCC finished on 217-9 after they were inserted on a decent pitch at Bourda. He then struck a fine 65 as the visitors responded with 218-6 in 35.1 overs.
GCC lost Winston Forrestor run out for three; Manny Ford and Martin Pestano Belle added 51 for the second wicket before they both fell for 22. Deonarine Seegobin and Ronaldo Ali Mohamed then featured in 79-run fourth wicket stand to stabilise the innings somewhat before Seegobin was taken at the wicket off Ashmead Nedd for 26. Mohamed played his shots, hitting six fours and one six in scoring 43, but after he was dismissed GCC lost a few quick wickets, however, Devon Lord propped up the innings with a robust 49 inclusive of five fours
and one six.
Carlton Jacques snared 2-39 while Dennis Squires, Nedd and Lynden Lyght picked up a wicket apiece.
Raymond Perez and Sachin Singh gave DCC a bright start as they added 40 in 8.4 overs before they were dismissed in quick succession; Perez was caught and bowled by Winston Forrester for 24 while Singh was lbw to Belle for 12. Rutherford and West Indies U19 wicket-keeper batsman Tevin Imlach then steadied the chase with a 133-run second- wicket re-union. The pair mixed aggression with defence as they rotated the strike nicely and dispatched the way ward balls with little trouble. Despite being put down on 31, Rutherford wasn’t afraid to play his shots; he clobbered eight fours and two sixes but was dismissed when DCC needed a further 45 from 62 balls. Imlach executed a number of handsome shots on both sides of the pitch, hitting six fours and one six before he succumb for 65. DCC then lost their way to an extent before Cleon Mc Ewan (08*) and Dexter George (07*) saw them home. Belle and Mohamed claimed two wickets each.
Rutherford was named man-of-the-match and best batsman in the final while Jacques was the best bowler. DCC received a trophy and $100,000 and GCC a trophy and $50,000.
Troy Benn of Police took the best individual figures (6-35), while Dennis Squires of DCC received the best bowler accolade (13 wkts) in zone A, Reginald Rodrigues of Police pocketed the trophy for the highest individual score (100), Sunil Singh of Transport SC took the best batsman (354 runs) prize, while Mohamed was the best all-rounder in zone B (249 runs and 10 wkts).
