President of the Guyana Boxing Association, Steve Ninvalle, has informed that Barbados, as of yesterday, signaled its intention to participate in the regions first Schoolboys and Juniors boxing tournament scheduled for April 29 and 30th at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall.
Secretary Kathy Harper-Hall contacted the GBA president, Ninvalle, on Friday with the news he disclosed. Barbados cannot say size of the team at the moment but will finalise and disclose shortly.
This brings the tally of overseas participants to three after last week St Lucia and Jamaica confirmed participation.
Ninvalle said that the nucleus of Guyana’s team will come from those who participate at the DDL Pepsi tournament.
The School Boys and Junior tournament comes at a time when Guyana has placed itself in the vanguard for the development of the sport in CARICOM. Ninvalle who was last year elected to serve on the International Amateur Boxing Association, AIBA’s council, has been pushing for the development of the sport in Guyana and the region and has received the support of his regional counterparts.
Last November Guyana organized the 13-country Caribbean Development Tournament which had the largest congregation of regional nations here for any sporting activity in over a decade.
In 2014 Guyana hosted a Four-nation Goodwill competition which saw Trinidad Jamaica and St Lucia competing here.
The schoolboys and Junior competition on April 29 and 30th at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall promises to be a slugfest among the youngsters as they seek for glory for their respective countries. The GBA is seeking the support of corporate Guyana and the fans to come out in full support for the event.
