Former Mayor of Linden, Patrick Raymond ‘Gabby’ Haynes of 537 Moraballi Street, Retrieve, Linden passed
away quietly on his way to the Linden Hospital Complex around 15:00 hrs on Thursday. He was 85 years.
Gabby Haynes was born in Hopetown Village, West Coast Berbice. He relocated to Linden after his marriage to Johanna Phillips in 1953. Gabby Haynes served as Mayor of the Town from 1990 to 1994. He was the Past President of the Upper Demerara Lions Club and member of the Mechanic Pride Lodge #21.
During his sojourn as a member of the Linden Community, he received many accolades. Among them is Honorary Member of the Guyana Association of Professional Engineers on April 28, 1984. He was also awarded the Medal of Service by the late President Hugh Desmond Hoyte on February 23, 1986.
On the 25th death anniversary of the Founder Leader Linden Forbes Sampson Burnham, he was awarded by the North American PNC/R for long service with exceptional dedication to the Party. He was also awarded a plaque from the Linden Tourism Committee in collaboration with the Mayor and Town Council for his sterling contribution.
Gabby Haynes was also the Chief Executive Officer of ‘PATNOMIKE’ coined after himself and two sons (Patrick, Noel and Michael) a welding and fabricating company which started in 1969 until its closure in 2003. With the opening of ‘PATNOMIKE’, jobs were created for many in and out of the community. Many welders and fabricators in Linden were once employees or apprentices of ‘PATNOMIKE’.
He was also the owner of ‘MOONGLOW’ a discotheque in Wismar Housing Scheme which provided entertainment for all ages. It was then renamed ‘CATWHISKERS’ before it was sold. It is now known as ‘CLUB XTREME’.
Gabby Haynes is survived by his wife Johanna, aka Beulah, 13 children, many grands and greatgrands.
