A 34-year-old man was killed on the spot early yesterday when a speeding minibus crashed into him onto the
Mocha, East Bank Demerara (EBD) main road.
The dead man has been identified as Sheldon Lennox Waithe, of Lot 23 Second Street, Mocha, EBD.
He was pronounced dead at the Diamond Diagnostic Centre a little after 11:30 hrs. Waithe was on his way home from work when he was killed. The driver of the minibus is in police custody assisting with the investigation.
According to information, the father of two was heading to the Mocha farm lands when he was struck from behind and flung into a nearby trench.
His brother, Sherwin Waithe, said that he received a telephone call that his brother was killed in an accident around 11:00 hrs.
“They said that they were taking him to the hospital. When we went there he was lying on the stretcher and he was already dead,” the sibling said.
He further revealed that when he saw his sibling at the hospital, he had blood at the back of his head.
Waithe said that he was informed that the minibus that struck his brother dead was racing with another bus.
“Both of them were racing coming into Mocha to pick up passengers when Sheldon was killed,” the sibling said.
Kaieteur News was told that the father of two worked in the interior and whenever he was in Mocha, he did construction and farming.
At the dead man’s home yesterday, his relatives said that they were informed that he was heading home from the farm with two other persons when he met his demise.
They were all riding bicycles. Sheldon Lennox Waithe was riding on the outside while the others were on the inner side.
When the bus struck Waithe, the man cannoned into one of his friends before ending up in the trench.
That friend had to be treated at the Diamond Diagnostic centre. This newspaper was told that the driver of the mini bus took Waithe and his friend to the hospital where the father of two was pronounced dead.
For last month, there were eight accidents in which eight people lost their lives as compared to the same period last year where there were nine accidents with 10 deaths.
