As a part of an ongoing plan to restore the pristine state of the City, the Mayor and City Council of Georgetown (M&CC) has begun rehabilitation of its buildings. The buildings include those that house the City Engineers
staff, the Constabulary Officers, the Municipal Training Complex and the Office of the Sexton.
The City Engineers Department has been tasked with undertaking the restoration works.
And according to a release issued by the M&CC, refurbishment works on the City Constabulary building has already been completed. Works included repairs and painting of the historic edifice. Also, the Department building has been extended to accommodate the newly formed Traffic Management Unit, it was revealed.
The Office of the Sexton that was in a state of disrepair has also been renovated. The Sexton Building is located in Le Repentir Cemetery. This building has a register with records of deceased family members and identifies the locations where their graves can be found. This information dates back to when the first internment was done on March 15, 1861.
Currently, works on the City Engineers Building are nearing completion. Repairs include removal of defective boards, replacing roof gutters, and painting.
The employees of this Department have been temporarily relocated to the City Constabulary Training School. This building was used to house a training complex, dormitory and Municipal Archives.
The Council, it was noted, also has plans to upgrade the training facility so that it would be on par with international standards.
Town Clerk, Royston King, said in addition to providing training and requisite tools and equipment for employees, it is important that the employers provide a working environment that is conducive to health and is free from potential hazards. “I am cognizant that a safe and healthy work environment enhances production,” King has asserted.
