Dear Editor,
The World Cup win for our under 19 team has somewhat renewed hope for the future of West Indies cricket, the victory came at a time when fans and commentators have placed the future of the game in a bad light not only because of the poor performance of our senior players, but also their demands for better remuneration coupled with the fact of the rift between the players and the WIPA – the association which supposed to be the bargaining agent for the cricketers.
It is the perception of some that the players placed more emphasis on money rather than the love for the game, but there is a strong argument that the players should not be blamed because the WICB does not treat their players with respect especially at the end of their career and cited the manner in which star batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul when he was asked to resign. No proper farewell was/is planned for a man who was the anchor of the Windies squad and who played the most test matches.
Brian Lara, the top runs scorer and former captain was also shabbily treated .Moreover fans are not happy with the West Indies Cricket Board because there seems to be a deep rooted problem with the individual regional Boards and Associations. Some called for the dissolution of the WICB.
Our young players made us proud which prompted favourable comments by President Dave Cameron who said the region is proud and “we see a clear path to the development of our future stars” former India star batsman Rahul Dravid who coached the defeated Indian squad praised the young West Indians.
He said “this is a start of a journey for them and every experience is a learning curve” Man of the match in the final was Kaecy Carty of St. Maarten. His sterling contribution dispelled doubts that the Dutch territory can produce outstanding cricketers.
Carty played all his cricket in St. Maarten and President of the Cricket Association, Imran Mc Sood Amjad is extremely delighted, Amjad has been promoting cricket in that territory for the past three decades. HIs company NAGICO is the sponsor of the regional 50 over tournament.
