An elderly woman was killed yesterday after she was struck down by a truck while using a pedestrian
crossing at Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara (ECD), in the vicinity of the market.
Kosilla Mohamed, 67, of Lot 21 Clonbrook, East Coast Demerara (ECD) was pronounced dead on arrival at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) around 13:30 hrs, 45 minutes after she was struck down.
Mohamed sustained injuries to her head and legs. The driver of the truck that struck her is in police custody.
According to information received, Mohamed was crossing the road via the pedestrian crossing when she was struck and flung some distance away from the point of impact.
Kaieteur News was told that the driver of the truck was on his cell phone and by the time he looked up, the woman was already in the middle of the road and he couldn’t stop.
Eyewitnesses at the scene said that the truck was speeding. They claimed that after the mother of five was struck down, she was still breathing but a lot of drivers refused to render assistance.
Luckily, a police vehicle passed and picked her up but by then it was too late.
Zaheer Mohamed, the dead woman’s son, said that he had just left the mosque when he received a call from his friend, informing him that his mother had met with an accident and was being taken to the GPHC.
When he reached the hospital, he was informed that his mother was already dead.
According to Mohamed, before he left home to go to mosque around midday yesterday, his mother was at home.
She informed him that she had to go to the Money Gram outlet at Golden Grove to collect money.
“I left home and she left to go collect money and then when I was leaving mosque, I heard about the accident,” a devastated Mohamed said.
He further related that he was informed that his mother had already collected her money and was making her way over the road to take a minibus when she was killed.
The woman leaves to mourn her five children.
Meanwhile, market vendors are pleading with the police to erect a sign to show the speed limit around that area.
They claimed that drivers usually speed even though a lot of persons would usually be around the area purchasing items.
