Rain dictated the flow of play on the opening day of the sixth round PCL First-Class encounter at the Providence stadium yesterday as the Guyana Jaguars reached 204-7 against the Trinidad & Tobago’s Red Force when
bad light stopped play 40 minutes before the re-scheduled 18:00 hrs close.
On a truncated day in which 75 minutes were lost due to the adverse weather a fantastic 113-run seventh wicket stand between Vishaul Singh and Veerasammy Permaul rescued the Jaguars from 85-6 to their eventual total.
Singh batted brilliantly and demonstrated tremendous temperament and hit 12 fours from 159 balls and 196 minutes in an unbeaten 88. He needs 12 more for his fourth First-Class ton.
Permaul played an excellent supporting role before he fell three short of his fourth fifty at this level. His 47 was decorated five fours and lasted 123 minutes and 94 balls.
Guyanese Marlon Richards has so far taken 3-31 while Reyad Emrit (2-41).
After play began 20 minutes late in overcast conditions due to a drizzle, Guyana opted to bat and Emrit and Richards got prodigious ‘both ways’ lateral movement with the new ball.
Chandrika’s outside edged off Richards got him going before Guyana’s newest Test player played two gorgeous boundaries off Emrit in contrasting fashion.
The first was an expansive back cut while the second was an effortless push past mid-on. An edged four took Chandrika to 15 before he was bowled by a beauty from Emrit at 15-1.
Tagenarine Chanderpaul, who made 81 in his last innings and took 24 balls to get off the mark yesterday, was bowled by the impressive Emrit for three to leave Guyana on 18-2.
The 29-year Jagessar turned the ball a long way on a spin-friendly track and troubled the left-handers.
Assad Fudadin, who lofted Jagessar over his head for two sixes, fell for 18 on the stroke of Lunch when he was bowled by Richards at 47-3. Leon Johnson was on 11.
After the interval the left-handed Vishaul Singh stroked Jagessar for consecutive
off-side boundaries, while his Skipper was beginning to settle in nicely before another shower, 16 minutes after Lunch, sent the players off the field at 66-3.
When play restarted after 55 minutes the Jaguars lost Johnson when he looked set for a big score. He was run out for 23 at 73-4 when Singh was caught ball watching.
Singh danced into Jagessar and whipped him through mid-wicket for four as he and Raymon Reifer tried to repair the early damage. But that was not to be since Reifer (1) was undone by an arm ball from Jagessar to put the visitors in the ascendency with the Jaguars on the ropes on 85-6.
By Tea the Jaguars had progressed to 126-6 with a good partnership developing between Singh, who played some nice shots and picked the gaps well and Veerasammy Permaul, who looked better the longer he batted. Permaul was on 22 and Singh eight away from his sixth fifty.
After Tea the sun made its appearance for the first time for the day. Singh reached his fifty with a delicate late cut when Imran Khan bowled one quicker. His half-century came from 109 balls, 121 minutes and included six fours.
Singh pressed his foot on the gas, raced into the seventies in a hurry with a flurry of boundaries none better than a glorious drive to the extra cover boundary off Deonarine to post the 150.
Permaul swept Khan for four and smashed him through the covers to contribute 27 in the 100 partnership, while Singh scored 57.
At that stage, with the moisture gone from the track and the batsmen looking untroubled, T&T’s Coach Gus Logie must have been very perturbed with the manner his team had let the hosts off the hook.
When looking set for a fifty Permaul played a loose cut off Richards and was caught behind at 198-7. Devendra Bishoo (2) and Singh (88) survived to the close of a day in which 71.4 overs where bowled.
