A 21-year-old Essequibo Coast resident was ordered to pay a fine of $50,000 or spend four months in jail, after
pleading guilty to a charge of simple larceny when he appeared in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan was Jermaine John a/k ‘Dougla’. He pleaded guilty to the charge which stated that on February 7, at Pamela Backdam, Potaro River, he stole one Blu cell phone, one Sim card and $55,000 in cash from Joseph Maloo.
Police Prosecutor Deniro Jones told the court that Maloo owns a dredge in the area and that John is employed by him as a pitman. He said that on the date in question, John left the backdam and went to the camp where he stole the items mentioned in the charge. Jones said that two days later, Maloo, after receiving certain information, went to Nine Miles Backdam and made contact with John in relation to his property.
According to the prosecutor, the man told his employer that he had spent the cash and lost the other items. Jones said that John was later taken into police custody and admitted to stealing the items.
