Justice Jo-Ann Barlow is presiding over the trial for which Alvin Semple is accused of murdering route 32 minibus driver Balram Teekaram.
Teekaram was murdered in the course of a robbery at his Sea View, Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara (WCD) residence on April 16, 2011.
According to the reports, Teekaram was awoken by noise in his home and upon checking he was confronted by perpetrators who held him at gunpoint and demanded cash and jewellery.
The armed bandits also held up the man’s son, Yogindra Teekaram. They severely beat the older Teekaram after which they ransacked the house and took away cash and articles then escaped.
The bandits reportedly carted off approximately $700,000 in cash, a silver chain, cellular phones, jewellery and iPods.
Balram Teekaram was severely injured in his right eye. He was rushed to the Leonora Cottage Hospital and later to the Intensive Care Unit at Georgetown Public Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Semple was later arrested and charged. He is currently on trial at the Georgetown High Court before Justice Barlow and a mixed jury.
The case is being presented by State Prosecutors Shawnette Austin and Tomeika Clarke. The accused is being represented by Attorney-at-law Madan Kissoon.
Yesterday, Yogindra Teekaram, the dead man’s son, testified that he was awoken on the night of the incident when a “cold object”was placed to his ear.
The witness, who currently resides in Florida, USA, told the court via video on Skype, that he remembered that it was around 01:00h (1 a.m.), when he was confronted by two strange men in his bedroom; one was armed with a gun. The gun was pointed at him.
Teekaram told the court that he begged the men not to harm them as they demanded cash, jewellery and other valuables.
The witness recalled that he was just a teenager at the time, and he begged the bandits to spare his life and that of his father. He even promised the intruders that he would hand over everything if they did not harm him or his father.
However a few minutes later, the witness recalled that a loud sound emanated from his father’s bedroom and there was what sounded like groans.
Teekaram recalled that after the bandits left his bedroom, he climbed over a wall and saw his father lying injured and there was blood around him.
The witness also recalled that he saw the face of one of the men after the rag which covered it fell off. He said that he knew that man to be Alvin; the accused. Teekaram said he was positive that he saw Alvin in his home that night, because he knew him from seeing him in the village where they lived.
