A Construction worker was yesterday remanded to prison, after being accused of spraying mace – a type
of chemical irritant popularly referred to as ‘boss’ – in the face of a police officer, before relieving him of two cell phones on Saturday.
Appearing before Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan was 27 year-old Carl Hillman of Regent Road, Bourda, Georgetown. He was charged for the offence of robbery with aggravation.
It is alleged that on February 6, at Durban Street, Werk-en-Rust, he robbed Police Lance Corporal Larry Joseph of two cell phones —carrying a total value of $53,000.
Hillman, who stood restlessly in the prisoner’s dock pleaded not guilty to the charge after it was read to him in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
He will make his next court appearance on February 22.
Police Corporal Deniro Jones presented the prosecution’s case. He told the court that on the day in question, around 02:30hrs, the police officer visited his friend’s place of work. He added that the defendant approached Joseph and his friend and threatened to shoot them.
Jones stated that Hillman sprayed “boss” in the face of the virtual complainant and relieved him of the items mentioned in the charge. According to Jones, the defendant made good his escape with the items and was later positively identified by the officer.
However, Hillman pleaded with the Magistrate to give an explanation. He claimed that he never robbed the officer and had not seen him before.
The prosecutor objected to bail citing the gravity of the charge and the penalty attached to the offence. These objections were upheld by the Magistrate.
