Residents of Wisroc, Linden, are calling on the relevant authorities to immediately remove an asphalt plant from their community. The plant which went into operation last December, is reportedly affecting the everyday lives of residents by releasing pollutants.
The Asphalt plants mixes gravel and sand with crude oil derivatives to make the asphalt used to pave roads, highways, and parking lots.
Several residents living in the area, especially those in close proximity to the plant, complain daily how it affects them.
The residents have complained about experiencing breathing problems due to the fine dust that is given off by the plant when it is in operation.
One resident said, “When duh ting start up, is like yuh breathing sheer tar.”
Another resident, who is a cosmetologist, said that she can’t even work when the plant is operational. She claims her 14-month-old is affected. “Me children throat burning all dey stomach. I got to send my baby to my mother all day and when they out duh thing then I going fuh me baby in de night.”
The resident also claims that her husband, who suffers with allergies, cannot be home. “Me husband only come home when it out. That is not fair to me and me children.”
Residents would usually be stay indoors from the smoke and dust being emitted from the plant. The residents say they cannot open their windows.
“Every time we open we windows or door we house messing up. It used to be dust and we could handle duh but this thing black and sticky wha flying. They didn’t even consult wid we before dey put it down. Dey coulda put it more at de backroad.”
One resident, Gary King, said that his wife who is a nurse can’t hang out her uniforms outside because they get dirty and ‘smelly’.
The residents are asking the relevant authorities to remove the plant immediately.
