DCB Inter-Association U-15 Cricket …
By Sean Devers
A confident 72-run opening stand between National U-15 batsman Sachin Singh and
fellow left-hander Brandon Jaikarran set the foundation for Georgetown’s seven-wicket win against West Demerara at Wales yesterday in the first round of Demerara Cricket Board (DCB) Inter-Association U-15 fifty overs cricket competition.
The 14-year-old Singh hammered three fours and three sixes in his 36-ball 42, while 13-year-old Jaikarran played the supporting role with a responsible 15 from 38 as their contrasting styles complemented each other perfectly to help Georgetown to 101-3 from 18.5 overs.
Dwayne Dick (3-16), Jermaine Benjamin (3-17), Ariel Tiku (2-21) and Daniel Paul (2-20) conspired to rout West Demerara for 100 in 48.3 overs in their own backyard.
A fighting 77-run third wicket partnership between opener Manoj Dhasrat who batted for 37 overs for 27 runs and Andre Seepersaud (19) failed to prevent the home team from joining East Bank as the first round losers.
In mostly overcast conditions and on a very heavy outfield Tiku bowled the first two batsmen with just eight runs on the board before Dhasrat and Seepersaud buckled down to try and bat their team back into the game with resolute defence.
Despite three fours from Seepersaud the partnership progressed at a snail’s pace but at that period of the game the pair played perfectly to suit the situation before Paul trapped Seepersaud at 79-3.
Dhasrat’s 109-ball vigil ended without addition to the score when he was removed by Dick to spark a dramatic collapse which saw seven wickets tumble for 21 runs with Benjamin capturing the last three wickets. Extras contributed 39 with wides alone being 33.
When the City side began their run chase Singh got going with an authoritative flick when pacer Aryan Batool strayed into his pads which set the tune for Singh’s entertaining knock.
The DCC player, who attends the Charlestown Secondary, dominated the stand with the more sedate Jaikarran.
The powerful Singh slogged swept Rajesh Budram for consecutive sixes and galloped into the 40s with a thunderous straight drive in the same over.
But when well set for his first Inter-Association or Inter-County fifty at the U-15 level, Singh got one that kept low from Raul Jethro and was trapped LBW on the back foot in the 13th over after the 50 was posted in the 9th over.
The 13-year Jaikarran was bowled by Seepersaud seven runs later at 77-2 before Garrick Persaud stroked Dhasrat for four before he was taken at cover next ball for nine with the score on 94-3.
Rodister Persaud, the younger brother of Guyana U-15 player Darshan Persaud, was unbeaten on seven when victory was achieved.
GT joined East Coast with wins after the first round and now play East Bank at Farm tomorrow, while West Demerara oppose East Coast at Enterprise.
