Days after a Richmond, Essequibo woman was removed from her home following complaints about
deplorable conditions, two more women have been “rescued”.
Region Five (West Berbice) officials yesterday said that staffers of the Social Welfare Department, with help from the Fort Wellington Police Station, rescued two women who were locked away for years in poor conditions.
One of the women taken away by ambulance is said to be a physically challenged, 39-year-old of Weldaad Village.
She was found in a small one-room building partially naked and surrounded by excrement and animal feed.
Regional officials claimed yesterday that the woman said she would have to drag herself physically to move around and asked to do work for food.
She started living in the backyard shack after falling ill 10 years ago.
She has a 20-year-old son and is the sister of a PPP\C Regional Councillor in Region Five.
The other woman removed yesterday morning was a 31-year-old of Belladrum Village, West Coast Berbice. She was found naked in a shack that was barred.
Regional officials said that she uses the place as toilet, bathroom and dining room. She had suspicious marks on her body.
Her parents live in front of her shack.
Relatives said that she has been locked away since she was about 15 when her mental condition deteriorated.
The matter is now in the hands of the welfare department and police.
The debate over persons who appear mentally unstable being locked away at homes got serious last Thursday after a resident alerted Prime Minister Moses Nagamootoo that a woman has been locked under filthy conditions at Richmond.
There have been growing concerns over the country’s capacity to handle mental patients with officials acknowledging more trained social workers are needed along with some tweaking of the social laws.
