The riverain Communities of Orealla and Siparuta over the weekend were a hive of activity as the Berbice Volleyball Association (BVA) led by President Levi Nedd and former President Gregory Rambarran led a 56 man contingent inclusive of five volleyball clubs, four males and one female, from the coast to the area.
The teams engaged in two days of rigorous competition which also included some 13 teams from the hinterland community inclusive of seven males and six females.
Apart from the rigorous two days competition the BVA officials took time off to present the two villages with a number of balls, nets, literature among other memorabilia. The presentation ceremony was held immediately after the BVA embarked on a successful outreach to the Orealla/ Siparuta community.
Presentations were made to the following – the Orealla Council which was received by Sport Officer Thesius Henry, to the Siparuta Community which was presented to Brankley Devai.
The schools were not left out and were presented with a significant amount of equipment. The equipment for the Orealla Schools was presented to Ms. Neave Rankin, those for the Siparuta Schools was received by VSO Ms. Shermilla Williams.
Several players also received medals and trophies for outstanding performances namely- Veral Felix- Under 15 Male, Romalo Rodrigues- Under19 Male, Rhonda Felix of Siparuta Female, Fazeema Alpin of Reggae Female, Rachel McIntosh of Force Eleven Female, Karen Lowe of Falcons Female, Orpha Kalestro of Black Birds Female, Ronetta Alpen-Under 19 female, Shaliza Edwards –Under 19 Female, Lee Edwards-Falcons Male.
Fair Play awards were presented to the following veteran players: – Susan Peneux and Carmen Vandenburg (Females) who are both said to be over 50 years, and Lloyd Peneux and David Henry (Males).
The senior male first place trophy went to PMTC 1, while the second place trophy went to 3 Doors Strikers, while in the female category Force Eleven A received the first place trophy and Force Eleven B the second place trophy. The Under19 male trophy went to PMTC 2 while Orealla received the second place trophy.
At the conclusion of the presentation ceremony, Toshao David Henry expressed thanks to the BVA and to all concerned with the Outreach and promised to make certain that more funds become available for the promotion of sport especially volleyball.
The BVA President Levi Nedd thanked the Toshao, council members of Orealla and Siparuta, the players, officials and the hundreds of spectators who witnessed the exciting and competitive matches.
Both Nedd and Rambarran along with Toshao David Henry and assistant organiser Kishan Persaud all expressed their pleasure and heaped praised on each other for their part played in making the activity the success it was. Special mentioned was made of assistant coordinator Mr. Keshan Persaud who was one of the main players in organizing the outreach.
In total 27 male games, eight female and three U19 games were played.
There was also an open senior male game between PMTC and Orealla/ Siparuta, while Black Birds opposed the Orealla /Siparuta females in an open female game.
There was also an U19 female and an U15 male exhibition matches making it a total of 42 games.
