Gajanand Singh (95), Suknanan 7-46 help GNIC to first innings points
By Sean Devers
Off-spinner Gajanan Suknanan grabbed 7-46 while Gajanand Singh (95) and Anthony D’Andrade (53)
added 103 for the fourth wicket to see GNIC to first innings points against University of Guyana (UG) on day one of their GCA Trophy Stall, GISC and Star Party Rentals two-day first division Cricket competition at the Malteenoes ground yesterday.
Suknanan befuddled the batsmen with his second five-wicket haul in three matches to take his wicket-tally to 16 as UG fell for 167 in the second session. This was despite a 90-run stand between Damel Douglas (55) and Devon George (54).
The 28-year-old left-handed Singh and D’Andrade joined forces with GNIC on 28-3 before Singh was taken at cover off left-arm spinner Damian Vantull off the last ball of the day with the score on 200-5.
GNIC won the toss in sweltering heat and UG were quickly reduced to 34-4 on the slow track and heavy outfield.
But George who reached the boundary four times and cleared it thrice in his 82-ball innings and Douglas, who hit seven fours and a six from 57 balls, staged a recovery and by Lunch the pair had taken their team 112-4.
But once the 90-run stand was broken just after the interval at 124-5 Suknanan sliced thought the batting line-up like a hot knife through butter, and the last six crashed for 43 runs. Opener Melroy Stephenson (22) and Vantull (17) were the only other batsmen to reach double figures for the students.
When GNIC began their reply, pacer Ray Newton sent back Gavin Boowah (0), Kurt Lovell (5), and Joshua Persaud (18) to sink GNIC to 28-3 before Singh and the 30-year-old D’Andrade revived the position with their entertaining century partnership.
Singh, who scored two fifties from 10 First-Class between 2004 and 2008,
was the initial aggressor but D’Andrade, who played for the Vice-Chancellors X1 against Zimbabwe in 2010 in Trinidad in a 50-over affair, soon found his rhythm.
The pair played some handsome shots before D’Andrade was spectacularly caught one-handed at square-leg by Stephenson off Douglas for 53 from 75 balls with three fours and three sixes at 139-4.
Singh and Jermaine Grovesnor (16*) added 61 for the fifth wicket with Singh playing some authoritative shots. Singh’s demise ended the day’s play with GNIC leading by 33 runs. Newton has so far taken 3-27 from 10 overs.
Meanwhile, at GDF the hosts made 350-5 declared with Kevin Ramdeen hammering 153, Quacey McPherson 79 and Seon Hetymer making 67.
Kenton Grumble took 3-64 for Police who reached 80-1 by the close with Sherwin McPherson unbeaten on 62.
Today is the final day in both matches and play is scheduled to start at 09:30hrs.
