…36 cases set to be heard; a whopping 31 for murder
The police contingent led by Deputy Superintendent Lyndon Isles and Inspector Charles, and comprising Sergeant Stephen Gobin and 24 other ranks from the Police B Division participated in the ceremonial opening of the Criminal Session of the Berbice High Court on Wednesday.
The ranks did a commendable job during the traditional parade march past and ceremonial opening of the February Criminal Session of the Berbice Assizes which opened on Tuesday and was held in front of the Berbice High Court on Esplanade and Vryheid Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice.
The police contingent which marched off from Police Headquarters at Coburg Street and Strand before proceeding along Strand, New Amsterdam to the High Court was accompanied by the police drum corps.
Justice Roxanne George, standing in for Justice Franklyn Holder, who will be presiding over the criminal session of the Berbice High Court took the salute and inspected the Guard of Honour. The judges were accompanied by Police Commander of ‘B’ Division; Assistant Commissioner Christopher Griffith and escorted by Cadet Officer Keith Williams.
Accompanying the parade were Deputy Superintendent Boodnarine Persaud, Assistant Superintendent Guy Nurse and Sergeant Marlon O’Donaghue among others.
A total of 36 cases are to be heard during the session including a whopping 31 for murder. All are men.
Four of the persons charged for murder have indicated their willingness to plead guilty. They are Omar Bacchus, Navin Sugrim, Roy Lewis and Charles Goodluck, 64.
The first matter is expected to begin on February 9, when Justice Holder is expected to return.
However, Justice George in addressing the jury went through the duties of the Jurors and their importance in the criminal justice system in Guyana.
She congratulated them for turning out in large numbers. She however warned them of the consequences of not attending. Employers who do not allow their employees to attend for jury service could be brought before the court and sanctioned.
