Andrew Hannibal, 45, of Bennet Dam, Rosignol, a pastor and founder of the Rosignol Deliverance Temple
of Marcy Dam, Rosignol West Bank Berbice was remanded to jail on Tuesday, last.
He is charged with having sex with a girl under 16.
Hannibal appeared before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver at the Blairmont Magistrate’s Court and pleaded not guilty.
The case was called in camera.
The pastor is accused of, between Friday January 29 and Saturday January 30, last, at Rosignol, engaging in sexual intercourse with the girl, who is also a member of his church.
It is understood that the man was having an affair with the fourth form schoolgirl for some time, ever since she was in third form.
According to reports, the girl’s parents missed her one night and began inquiring about her whereabouts. They went looking for her, but were unsuccessful.
The man’s attorney gave a lengthy submission for bail and cited his good character. He said that the man has been a pastor for over 27 years. He is a well respected person in the community. He is the founder of the church and has also founded eight other churches in the country.
The attorney also stated that during the time of the alleged incident, Hannibal was out of the district on the Linden Highway.
Prosecuting Sergeant Althea Solomon argued vehemently for bail to be refused. She stated that the accused and the victim lived in proximity to each other.
She also stated that if granted bail there is a possibility that the accused will use his influence to tamper with witnesses and the virtual complainant.
After the matter was reported the man was arrested and placed in custody.
The magistrate refused bail and remanded him to jail until February 16, when the matter will be called again.
