Dear Editor,
Reference is made to a news article in today’s edition – February 4, 2016 of your newspaper titled, “Govt. considers re-entering rice milling – AgriMinister” If implemented, this is a laudable consideration once the installations are managed efficiently and transparently. Currently, billions of dollars are allocated from the Treasury to cushion negative effects within the industry. The bulk of this support is geared to facilitate post harvest operations such as paddy purchase and the technical operations of Receiving, Drying, Storage, Milling and Marketing. I am of the view that government should always have an option in assuring food security and transportation services for the nation. Already, one family controls a large percentage of paddy intake installations across the rice belt; and while private enterprises could be encouraged as the chosen engine of growth for the economy, it’s important for the government to have controlling interest in additional facilities which can guarantee the national interest as a major objective.
