The sixth edition of the Desmond Dorsett Memorial Road Race Classic was successfully held on Sunday last on the Corentyne Coast which saw 27 athletes from the Ancient County facing starter’s orders.
The four mile race saw Denroy Junior crossing the fine line ahead of his opponents to win the Under-19 category thus taking the overall trophy and bragging rights in the race that was organised by the Dorsett Family of Leeds/No50 village Corentyne.
Placing second was Arsenio Grey with Keran Sampson third; Chelsea Toney was the one runner in the female U-19 category with being all alone.
Among the juniors boys De Andrea Shabaz was the first to cross the finishing line followed by Devon Joseph and Ralph Seenarine in that order. Swarsattie Mattadin was the leading junior female ahead of Leisa Fraser.
The top finishers were all presented with trophies, medals and monetary rewards compliments of the Dorsett family. Participants were presented with a Desmond Dorsett Memorial t-shirt, certificates and ribbons for competing.
The main race route covered from #47 village to the popular #53 Complex, a distance of four miles; the U-15 athletes and the U-19 females covered a distance of 3 ½ miles from #49 village.
Residents in the communities along the route came out in large numbers to witness the event.
The race was held in memory of the late Superintendent Dorsett, an ardent sports fan who participated in numerous sports activities including cricket and athletics in the Guyana Police force and community.
Director of Sports Christopher Jones was on hand at the event and during a brief address, noted his commitment on behalf of the Government. Contributions for the race was garnered from Retired Assistant Commissioner Alvin Smith, Anthony Jerrick, Deputy Superintendent Boodnarine Persaud, Nicholas Jaundoo, Vishnu Super Store, overseas based Cordel Bernard and Dr. Dennis Whyte.
