The police are investigating the circumstances in which a young policeman lost his life following a freak accident on the Whim Public Road at Corentyne, Berbice.
Dead is 27-year-old Constable 22380 Ray Simon, a father of one, of Lot 21 Helena No.1 Mahaica.
The accident involved motor lorry GLL 9308, driven by a 49-year-old Corentyne resident.
According to information, Simon who joined the Guyana Police Force in 2014, was posted to Berbice in May of the same year and was stationed at Whim Station, attached to the patrol outfit.
Information revealed that Simon, who resided at the barracks since he was posted to the station, was an athlete, and would indulge in early morning exercises. He would normally leave the compound around 06:00 hrs and go jogging on the public road.
Yesterday he ventured to Liverpool village, but because it was raining he decided to seek transportation back to the Whim Police compound. He was standing on the road and decided to board a passing estate lorry which had stopped to pick up some sugar workers.
It was furthered revealed that around 06:50 hrs the vehicle arrived at Whim and Simon along with others in the lorry called out to the driver to stop, but he continued driving.
The driver stated that he did not hear the shouts and was about to slow down to stop at a lorry stop when he heard a loud noise coming from the tray of the lorry. He then stopped and looked through the left side wing mirror and saw Simon lying motionless on the parapet.
Eyewitnesses stated that Simon who was in the tray of the truck wanted the lorry to stop at the entrance of the Whim Police Station road. However after the vehicle passed and was slowing down to stop at another lorry stop. The young cop decided to disembark the moving lorry. He allegedly jumped from the front step but lost his balance and fell. He was then run over by the rear wheel of the vehicle.
He suffered multiple abrasions about his body including his head and abdomen.
Simon was picked up and placed in another lorry, and rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
His mother Wanita who travelled to Berbice upon receiving the dreaded news was distraught.
Ray Simon was the eldest of three boys. His father died when he was a child.
Police Commander Assistant Commissioner Christopher Griffith visited the scene along with Deputy Superintendent and officer in charge of Subdivision No. 2 (Corentyne); Lindon Isles, Deputy Superintendent and Officer in charge of traffic Doodnarine Persaud, Inspector Williams and members of the Cops and Faith in Berbice.
A Post Mortem examination is to be conducted soon.
