Dear Editor,
Again do permit me a few lines to express a situation that once again catapulted me into the vortex of awe, regarding the final destination of the country that I still call home. The catalyst for my flight was Kaieteur News Wednesday, February 3, 2016 captioned thus: “Parika man found dead in house with hands and feet bound.” While this tragic situation did garner my profound sympathy, it was at the selfsame time dislodged by the unfolding of events that thereafter followed. According to the news report, the neighbor Jean Halley heard calls for help from Ramroop Rameshwar also called “Old Boy” around 21.30 hrs. on Monday evening, but did not respond to same as the deceased usually uttered similar words when inebriated. There was definitely an omission as to what response was previously given, when calls for assistance or the said verbal utterances were made.
Did anyone ever investigate at least to ascertain the underlying reason for the call, even if the result was similar to the well- known fable of the boy who cried wolf? In the Good Book Matthew 23: 39 there is a well-known parable of the Good Samaritan, which Jesus tells after he has given instructions to his followers to love their neighbours as themselves. Was the now- deceased not a neighbor? The obvious question that follows is; Where was the love? Did the President during his acceptance speech implore the nation to live as one even as is stated in our national motto- One People One Nation One Destiny.
Surprisingly, however, the said individual on or around 06.00 a. m on seeing just the top half of the deceased door open immediately concluded that someone had attacked the deceased. This information was relayed to her daughter who then notified the ranks. While no one is calling on her to disturb a potential crime scene, kindly assist me in joining the dots. When shouts of help, help go unanswered, due to it being the norm yet an assumption is immediately made that the half-opened top door means an attack. Am I missing the forest not for the trees but the saplings? There is something fishy in the township of Parika? Either the other half has not been reported? or There’s more beyond the door?
A question that readily springs into the mind of mentally functioning individuals is that of whether or not we are our brother’s keeper? Again referring to the Good Book 1Corinthians: 13, we are once again reminded that love is even greater than faith and hope. While no one individual is the absolute keeper of others in that we are not responsible for everyone’s safety when we are not present, yet we have a civic duty towards each other. Sorry but Jean Halley failed in executing her civic duty. Does Guyana need to effect or institute the Good Samaritan law, as is done in other parts of the world in order to ensure that the biblical teachings are manifested in our displayed behavior and attitude towards each other? Rest in peace “ Old Boy”. To your relatives justice may come faster than ever imagined. .
Yvonne Sam.
