It’s not often that you could use the words patient and Robin Bacchus in the same sentence but
yesterday at Bourda in hazy sunshine Bacchus compiled a responsible 55 on the second day of the three day practice match for the PCL First-Class resumption at Providence from next week Friday.
The left-handed Bacchus began in his usual aggressive manner and along with Kandasammy Surujnarine took his team to 60-0 by Tea in reply to the formidable 383 made by Vishaul Singh’s X1. By the close Bacchus’ X1 had reached 115-4, still 168 away from avoiding an innings defeat.
Bacchus slashed Keon Joseph behind point for four when given the room to flay his arm before edging the Berbician fast bowler fortuitously to the third-man boundary next ball as Joseph worked up a fair head of steam on a flat track.
Bacchus flicked Romario Shepherd fine for four before a couple of imperious cover driven boundaries off Joseph sped to the boundary, while Surujnarine played the supporting role in the half-century opening stand.
Bacchus continued to flow and whipped Raymon Reifer disdainfully off his legs for four before pulling Shepherd to the boundary. Surujnarine freed himself with a pulled a boundary off Joseph and by Tea the pair had built a solid foundation with Bacchus on 44 and Surujnarine on 13.
After Tea Bacchus buckled down to play a long innings and took 58 minutes to crawl from 44 to 50, which he reached from 112 balls, 185 minutes with eight fours.
Surujnarine (12) was dismissed by a brilliant reflex catch at short leg by Tagenarine Chanderpaul and he tucked left-arm spinner Veersammy Permaul firmly off his legs in the second over after the break to end the 60-run partnership.
Bacchus curbed his natural aggressive instinct before he got himself bugged down and was LBW to Permaul for 55 from 193 minutes, 122 balls with eight fours to leave the score on 85-2.
Gajanand Singh (4) and Jonathon Foo (1) were removed by Gudakesh Motie in the space of 12 runs to slip to 112-4.
Devendra Bishoo joined the left-handed Chanderpaul Hemraj, who played some good shots in an unbeaten 37 with two fours and two sixes to see Bacchus’ X1 to the close. Motie (2-29) and Permaul (2-36) are the wicket-takers so far.
Earlier, Singh’s X1 resumed on 280-6 and led by an attacking undefeated 67 from Anthony Bramble who resumed the day on 12 and was still there when Singh’s X1 were bowled out on the stroke of lunch.
Bramble’s innings came from 128 balls, included 10 fours and he shared in a 66-run stand with Permaul (29) before Permaul was bowled by Bishoo who also had Deter Soloman (7) stumped and bowled Motie for a duck.
The innings ended when Shepherd (10) was run out. Foo (3-44), Bishoo (3-90) and Paul Wintz (2-33) were the main wicket-takers for Bacchus’ X1.
Play on the final day starts at 09:00 hrs today.
