There have been questions why Government continues to keep Mahendra Sharma as the Head of the Guyana
Energy Authority (GEA) when he was, in fact, listed on the PPP’s list of candidates during the May 11, 2015 elections.
When faced with this concern yesterday at the Ministry of the Presidency, Minister of Natural Resources, Raphael Trotman, told reporters that Government is not in the business of witch-hunting.
He noted that the GEA falls under the control of the Minister of Public Infrastructure, David Patterson, and noted that a more detailed response would be given by the subject minister on the matter.
In the interim, the Natural Resources Minister said that, “It is not the objective or intent of this Government to witch hunt. Not because your name is Mahendra Sharma we will remove you from office. If you are functioning we will keep you.”
He continued, “The other matter is that when one takes over a government, it would be fool hardy to sweep everyone away because in a sense you would be taking the legs off from your own government.”
Trotman emphasized that he does not believe that the name of someone should disqualify them from serving their country.
Minister Patterson, when contacted yesterday said, “We said that we are not in a witch hunt business and the policy of the government has to be executed. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of the Presidency was on the PPP list of candidates and he still remains.”
Reminded of the numerous criticisms the APNU+AFC made in the past about Sharma’s competence, Patterson
said that the Board of the GEA is in place and they are looking into that matter. He said that when the Board is finished with its assessment of the agency, they will make recommendations to him upon which he will consider and act accordingly.
