A convicted rapist was yesterday sentenced to serve 25 years in jail.
The sentence was imposed on Colin Bess after a mixed 12-member jury found him guilty of raping a child under 16 years of age. The judgment was handed down at the Georgetown High Court around noon. According to the indictment, the incident took place on April 2, 2013.
Bess was given an opportunity to respond following the announcement of the jury. He told the court that he is not guilty.
“I am innocent of this charge,” Bess told the court before he was sentenced.
State Prosecutors Michael Shahoud and Narissa Leander called five witnesses to the stand to testify during the closed hearing.
Justice Navindra Singh presided over the trial. He told Bess that the role of the court is to protect children not to harm them.
