Dear Editor,
As an Independent voter who has been a vocal critic of the previous government, I feel compelled to write about the present government’s missteps in Corentyne.
The new position of Special Assistant to the Prime Minister that has been given to Mr. Gobin Harbhajan smacks of AFC patronage and I am wondering what message this sends to the Guyanese people. He has been given an office, salary, car and other benefits to primarily weed out corruption but isn’t this the job of career civil servants who are already being paid by taxpayers ?Mr. Harbhajan has not got the qualifications for such a position and yet pronounces on highly technical subjects as irrigation and electrical power. I am not saying education is paramount but you should have a lot of experience in these areas rather than just posing for the cameras.
Please don t get me wrong corruption at all levels should be exposed and eliminated but Mr. Harbhajan’s background disqualifies him from offering service to help Guyanese Mr. Nagamootoo needs to pick his assistants carefully and do background checks and not reward them for winning elections. With all the rumours of his responsibilities being diminished he should not give APNU more ammunition for this.
