Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me from a humble, civic standpoint to request elucidation, even in its most germane form. It is in reference to the Kaieteur News, January 16, 2016 item under the title: “Women power ruled the powerlifting stage in 2015.”
A seeming overly exaggerated and hyped up Britny Mack was listed as a Gold Medalist at the South American, Pan American and Commonwealth Championships. Permit me to point out that Miss Mack was the ONLY competitor in her weight class and category. I find this to be misleading to the Guyana public, especially when it comes to soliciting sponsorship for such event. I further blame the Secretary and President of the GAPLF for letting this misleading information be submitted to the media. Miss Mack’s ranking in the said article is listed at the very bottom of the list, yet credit is being given as if it deserves attention. What has sports in Guyana turned into? Is it where we just show up to a competition and get publicity as if we won a gold medal in the Olympics? Our achievements to the public should be based on performance, not attendance. We cannot misinform the public to in relation to sponsorship. It will ruin the sport for the other competitors who deserve the opportunity.
It must be noted that powerlifting has always been labeled and looked at as a male dominant sport. Parents generally don’t want their young daughters to be traveling internationally in a male dominant sport. This is where Miss Mack has taken the opportunity to claim the first female under-18 in a male dominant sport and new category. However, her numbers do not speak for themselves as she is the only competitor. Further, I find it ironic too that the title of this article is “Women power ruled the powerlifting stage in 2015” and yet the article is also focusing on a male competitor, Rudolph Blackman. Are we getting confused with the males and females when it comes to power lifting? The Guyana team was essentially the only team at the last overseas (Commonwealth) competition. What a waste of sponsorship funds.
