Bel Air Rubis defeated Everest Cricket Club by 14 runs to claim the Guyana
Floodlight Softball Cricket Association (GFSCA)/Demerara Cricket Club (DCC) and Trophy Stall U13 title on Sunday night.
Openers Umarie Lalbachan (01) and Shivanand Gosain (05) were removed by Mohamed Zameer and Usherteva Balgobin respectively as Bel Air Rubis were reduced to 9-2, batting first at DCC in front of a fair-sized crowd. However, Man-of-the-match Andrew Samaroo and Hemnauth Dindyal resurrected the innings with a third wicket stand of 86 with level-headed batting on a decent track. The pair defied some steady bowling as they gathered runs on both sides of the pitch.
Samaroo struck five lovely fours before he was caught off Balgobin for 43, while Dindyal was lbw to Hemant Dalip for 25. Extras contributed 29; Balgobin finished with 3-13 and Zameer 1-20.
Balgobin and Yeudistir Persaud added 23 for the opening stand to give their team a fine start before Persaud, one of the tournament’s leading run scorers was dismissed for the first time in the competition when he was run out for two. Balgobin and Nyron Bissu kept their team in the hunt with a second wicket stand of 24. While
Balgobin was content to rotate the strike, Bissu signaled his intentions early when the drove Gosain handsomely to the cover boundary to get his innings going. The right-handed Bissu continued to time the ball well and reached the boundary on two more occasions before he skied Dindyal to mid-off when on 21. His dismissal saw a change of fortune-Bel Air Rubis fought back with some tidy bowling, picking up the wickets of Kampta Seepersaud (04), Dalip (06) to leave Everest at 64-4.
Runs gradually dried up as Dindyal who snared 2-14 and Rudranauth Kissoon with 2-19 maintained a tidy line, giving their team the upper hand. With 21 needed from the final over, Everest only managed 11, losing Balgobin run out for 18 (2×4) and Zacharia Mootoo for seven. Andrea Boyce (08*) and Mohamed Zameer (01*) were the not out batmen as Everest finished on 91-6.
President of the GFSCA Ramchand Ragbeer congratulated the players and the other participating teams. He added that he was impressed with the talent on show and urged them to take the game seriously as well as their education. Managing Director of Bel Air Rubs Lalat Gainda who is also an executive member of the GFSCA said the future looks bright and pledged his continued support, while Caramchand Rambarran of Everest thanked the sponsors.
