Senior National Chess Champion, Wendell Meusa, ended the second day of action on 3 points to stay in contention for the top prize when action in the seven-round Trophy Stall Chess championships resumed at the National Racquet Centre, Woolford Avenue, yesterday afternoon.
However, the tournament retained its competitive nature as Loris Nathoo lurks in the second place just ½ point adrift of Meusa. Eight other players are bunched together with two points apiece including Anthony Drayton, Davion Mars, Roberto Neto, Ron Motilall, Frankie Farley, Kristoff Persaud, Taffin Khan and Maria Thomas Gonsalves.
Those players amassing 1 point apiece to date are Gabriel Ferrer, Errol Tiwari, Rashad Hussain, Kenrick Braithwaite, Ghansham Allijohn, Jessica Callender and Jason Wills while Owen Mickle has managed to scrape up ½ point. Aslam Hussain and John Wong are still to win a game and remain in the cellar on zero point.
Meusa started his trek with a decisive win over Ferrer and closed off with another victory over Anthony Drayton. Nathoo outfoxed Tiwari but could only manage a draw against Farley. Khan’s victories came at the expense of Neto and Mickle, while Neto bounced back from his loss to Khan to defeat Braithwaite.
Gonsalves chalked up her 2 points after defeating Callender and Tiwari, while Drayton defeated Mootilall in his first game before conceding his second to Meusa. Several games ended in default and Rashad Hussain, Kriskal Persaud and Adam Hussein benefitted after John Wong, Adam Hussain and Jessica Callender failed to turn up for their respective games.
The players will now rest for a week before activities resume next Saturday and Sunday when the remaining 4 games will be played. The Trophy Stall, of Bourda Market, the City Mall and South Road, is the sponsor of the tournament and has donated several beautiful trophies for the respective winner and runners-up. President of the Guyana Chess Federation, Irshad Mohamed, functioned as the Tournament Director.
