Demerara won the male Masters and Female open titles when the Unity softball cricket tournament was contested on Saturday at the Guyana National Stadium, Providence.
Demerara overcame Berbice by six wickets in the Masters’ category by six wickets. Batting first, Berbice managed 113-4 of their allotted 15 overs. Eon Abel struck three fours and one six in a top score of 45, while John Sumair made 43 with five fours. Ramo Malone had 1-20. Demerara responded with 119-4 in 14.3 overs. Jagdesh Persaud slammed one four and four sixes in scoring 56, while Mohamed Rafeek made 25 and Malone 19. Sumair, Jaga Bojh and Rajin Moonsammy had one wicket apiece.
Demerara overcame Berbice by 35 runs in the female encounter. Batting first, Demerara posted 109-5 off their allocation of 10 overs.
Matana Cambridge clobbered three fours and ten sixes in a top score of 75 while Latoya Smith got 19. Shamkia Gajnabi had 2-19. Berbice responded with 74-7 in 10 overs. Tishanie Cort scored 19 and Jenifer Qualie made 15. Smith snared 3-5 and Haseena Mohamed 2-10.
Regal beat Cotton Field of Essequibo Coast by seven wickets in the male open semi final. Essequibo took first turn at the crease and made 113-3 in 10 overs. Patrick Rooplall led with 69 inclusive of one four and ten sixes; Amir Nizamudeen, Richard Latif and Martin Dutchin had one scalp each.
Regal replied with 114-3 in 9.5 overs. Dutchin slammed one four and eight sixes in scoring 62, while Chien Gittens got 18 and Navin Singh 12. G. Singh, D. Dindyal and Shawn Grovensor took one wicket apiece.
Wolf’s Warriors defeated Karibee Boys of Berbice by 57 runs in their semi final encounter. Wolf’s Warriors scored 119-7 in 10 overs. Safraz Karim stroked 43 and Wazir Hussain 32. Karibee Boyz responded with 62-7 in 10 overs. Keon Sinclair and Seon Hetmyer made 15 and 12 respectively. Azaad Azeez captured 3-6.
However, the organisers called off the male open final between Regal and Wolf’s Warriors due to time constraint much to the disappointment of the players and fans.
