Dear Editor,
Kindly permit me space in your column to express my hurt so our country and beyond can know the truth. I am the pregnant wife of a police officer and what my husband faces in the Guyana Police Force is unbearable injustice. As a police constable in the Police Force in our country once you are not highly favoured none of the authorities listen to your pleas, not the Office of Professional Responsibilities (OPR) or the police welfare. In February 2015 my husband and his colleague were under investigation for an alleged offence. They were both escorted to the Tactical Service Unit at Police Headquarters under heavy police siren as if they were some notorious bandits and placed in the lock up for five days breaching their rights even as civilians. I met with several authorities after which I settled for a fair investigation to be carried out by OPR. My husband’s arrest was later made open and he remained at TSU for duties from that time to date. It took OPR months for that minor investigation to conclude and don’t let me mention the amount of push around and man handling that we both faced trying to get answers.
About ten months later we were made to understand that the investigation has been completed and the files with advice from the Director of Public Prosecution has recommend that my husband and his colleague be charged departmentally for neglect of duties since according to the investigation conducted, the station sergeant who made the allegation was actually covering her own self since her retirement was close. That was never done. Instead the sergeant retired happily and these two police constables remained at TSU, troubled with the financial situation of travelling from far location to get to work. Despite their numerous pleas to be placed to their division since they are both family men, no one would listen to them. Recently my husband went to the officer in charge for transfers and humbly explained to her that his wife is pregnant and was diagnosed with severe high blood pressure. He is therefore seeking her permission to be returned to his division or closer to home so he can take care of his wife in any emergency situation.
We produce a medical certificate of his wife’s condition requiring bed rest with only an eight year old child in the home. The officer advised my husband what steps he should take to secure that transfer at the same time informing him that she doubt whether the force will ever send him back to his division. So far we have not been replied to. Editor my concern is where else can these police constables go for someone to listen to them?
