Two men charged with the murder of prominent businessman Abdool Farouk Ghanie Persaud, proprietor of
Hamson’s General Store were remanded to prison yesterday by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan in the Georgetown Magistrates’ Courts.
Floyd Anthony Rammit, 27, who was the slain businessman’s handyman and who resides at Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara and Kemo Tyler Evans, 17, of Lot 192 B Field Sophia were not required to plead to the indictable charge.
Particulars of the charge stated that between April 15 and 16 2015, at Lot 97 Collingswood Avenue, Nandy Park, East Bank Demerara, they murdered Persaud aka ‘Brother’, during the course of a robbery.
The Magistrate remanded both men until February 8, when they will make another court appearance for fixtures and statements.
According to reports, on April 15, 2015, the 56-year-old businessman left his home and went to his place of business on Regent Street. Persaud returned home around 18:00hrs that day. Approximately 20:00hrs, three men were seen at his home.
The next day, around 07:20hrs, his reputed wife realized that something was amiss as Persaud did not arrive at her Eccles home to pick up their daughter. She sent an employee to his home and found his lifeless body lying at the back of his yard in a pool of blood.
There were wounds to his left chest and cheek. The police were summoned and found that his licensed firearm, cell phone and other items belonging to the man were missing.
The businessman was taken to the East Demerara Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Investigations were carried out and Rammit was arrested and charged with Persaud’s murder. Rammit, who worked as Persaud’s handyman, was charged with the man’s murder. Rammit had reportedly provided the police with a detailed statement on how he and his accomplices killed and robbed the businessman.
A few months later, the police issued a wanted bulletin for Evans in connection with the killing.
Persaud’s relatives had posted a $3M reward for the arrest of the wanted man.
