Two of Guyana’s exceptionally talented national players, Jamaarj Assanah and Aroydy
Branford, have been invited to play for the Bishop’s Stortford Hockey Club in the East Men’s Hockey league.
The duo’s exploits were noted by Bishop’s Stortford’s coach, former Trinidad & Tobago International Albert Marcano, who made contact with the players through England based Guyanese International Marvin Dannett.
Assanah has performed at a consistently high level for the past few years, winning numerous MVP awards on the local scene. Internationally, Assanah has been equally consistent; at the 2014 Indoor Pan American Cup in Montevideo, Uruguay where he was Guyana’s most outstanding player, scoring seven (7) goals in five (5) matches to end the tournament as the second highest goal scorer.
He was also part of the midfield setup that powered Guyana to a respectable 4th place finish at the Pan American Challenge, in Chicklayo, Peru last year, where their only two loses were penalty shoot-outs.
Branford has also had an exceptional two-year run, where he spearheaded the junior national
team to a record of 10 wins and 3 losses on their last two international tours.
He has also added a creative flair to the senior national team and was part of Guyana’s historic Bronze medal winning team at the 2014 Indoor Pan American Cup. He lit up last year’s Pan American Challenge, in Peru scoring nine (9) goals in five (5) matches to end the tournament as the number two goal scorer.
Once the pair’s visa applications are approved they will join the club for the second half of the 2015/2016 season.
Branford is due to represent Guyana at the junior Pan American Championships scheduled for Toronto, Canada from May 20-28, while Assanah will be using the experience to prepare for upcoming senior international engagements.
