A float parade will depict Guyana’s history on gaining independence in May, 1966. This event which will occur on May 26, and is intended to create pride in Guyanese, will be staged in five sequences.
Dr. Nicolette Henry, Junior Minister of Education, Department of Culture Youth and Sport, said that the floats will “speak particularly to the events, to the people, the culture,” all of which have shaped the years of progress in Guyana.
Even the way people used to dress in the past will be showcased.
Fifty floats will participate and each sequence will represent a decade of Guyana after independence. Focus will be placed on the legacy of persons in the literary field and academia, on symposiums, workshops and all the pioneers who have defined Guyana for the past 50 years. These pioneers have blazed the trail so that youths of today can be inspired to continue the path of developing Guyana.
The national colours will be the theme for the event. Local music will be played to encourage patriotism during the celebrations. Guyana’s national colours are red, black, gold, white and green found on the Golden Arrowhead, the national flag.
This celebration serves as a reflection of Guyana’s history, the progress made and the lessons learnt since the country attained independence on May 26, 1966.
