Blake in charge of squad
The Guyana Boxing Association (GBA) will be hosting its second international competition in a five months
period when they stage a School Boys and Juniors tournament on April 29 and 30 here. This follows on the heels of last November’s highly successful 13-nation Caribbean Development Tournament.
Leading local boxing coach Sebert Blake has been named head coach of the Guyana team for the event. Blake is an AIBA Three Star, World Series Boxing (WSB) and AIBA Professional Boxing (APB) qualified coach. Veteran coach Terrence Poole is the only other coach from Guyana to hold Three Star certification.
The association has sent invitations to Jamaica, St. Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago to be part of the tournament. GBA President, Steve Ninvalle informed that at a meeting of Caribbean administrators last year, the lack of activity in the region’s female and junior department was highlighted. He said that, Guyana remains in the forefront of the development of the sport in the region and this was the reason for the organizing of the event.
Citing the lack of finances, he stated that this was the reason for only three countries being invited to the two-day event.
Meanwhile, Ninvalle supported the appointment of Blake one of Guyana’s most qualified boxing coaches here, to get the youngsters in shape.
He expressed full confidence in Blake’s ability, his commitment and enthusiasm that will transfer to the youngsters being able to represent Guyana well in April. Blake will be assisted by several other coaches to produce the best possible squad.
