As part of the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations, the 4th annual Wilbert Benjamin 50-mile cycle road race will be held in its honour where the leading exponents of the sport at the senior, junior,
veteran, female and Under-16 levels will all compete.
The Ancient County of Berbice is known for producing numerous cricketers who have represented at the highest level in the world and is set on a similar path in the cycling arena. In the past couple of years, dozens of races have been organised aimed at lifting the standard of the riders based in Berbice and by extension, Guyana.
Sunday’s race which is being sponsored by Benjamin Sports Store will be no different according to Organiser, Randolph Roberts who has also disclosed that lucrative prizes will be on offer in all the categories.
In the senior category, the top six finishers will be rewarded while there will also be a total of eight (8) sprint prizes at stake. The top three juniors, veterans, females and Under-16 finishers will receive prizes. The latter two categories will ride 5-miles.
The race will pedal off at 10:00hrs in front of the Benjamin Sports Store at Fyrish proceed to the #51 Police Station before returning to the starting point for the finish.
Roberts informed that a letter has been written to His Excellency President David Granger inviting him to start Sunday’s race, while invitations have also been sent to Regional Chairman Mr. David Armogan and former Mayor, Mr. Errol Alphonso.
Defending champions is Orville Hinds. The riders should be primed for this event since the 2016 season will kick off in the city on Saturday at the Inner Circuit of the National Park. Berbice has already hosted two events which were both won by Romello Crawford, an up and coming star. (Franklin Wilson)
