Loggers, miners and fishermen who are working in Moruka, Region One have all complained bitterly about the unprofessionalism of the police officers operating in that particular area of the interior. They want the intervention of other law making bodies.
Just last week 19-year-old Pernel Fiedtkou, of Reliance Village, on the Essequibo Coast almost lost his life after a resident of Moruka attacked and chopped him to his left hand. The wound needed seven stitches.
Fiedtkou, who worked as a logger, said the incident happened last Monday evening. The injured young man said that he was in the house with two of his friends when an older man whom he knew from the area came and started to throw gasoline on the building.
Fiedtkou said he jumped out of his hammock and attempted to confront the man who threw the gasoline. He said before he knew it, the man who was armed with a cutlass chopped him to his left hand. He however managed to escape before the other attempted chop was launched by the man. That blow landed on Fiedtkou friend’s face as he rushed to rescue him.
What is worrying is the unprofessional approach the police have since taken, Fiedtkou stressed. He noted that the police released the assailant on $50,000 station bail. He also lamented that the police handpicked persons and recorded their statements.
Meanwhile, a fisherman from Dartmouth Village who plies his trade in the interior also complained about the unprofessionalism of the police officer operating in Region One. (Yannason Duncan)
