Dear Editor,
The Ministry of the Presidency calls on the Publisher and Editor of Kaieteur News (KN) to immediately retract the erroneous statement attributed to the His Excellency President David Granger that appears in the KN Editorial, Monday January 18, 2016- under the caption, ‘Perpetuating the Myth’.
In the Editorial it is erroneously and misleadingly stated that President Granger in his address to Parliament on January14, 2016, said that he is optimistic that Guyana will achieve economic independence by the time it celebrates its 50th independence in May ( 2016).
President Granger never made such a statement in his address to Parliament. The President in his address made reference to our (Guyana’s) continued quest for economic independence by saying “Changing the name of a country was a simple matter. Revolutionising the economy, indeed, was a difficult and never ending process. This year -2016- is an opportunity to hasten our economic development.
Our Golden Jubilee year presents us with the challenge of renewing the ‘Independence Covenant’ and rekindling the enterprising spirit of ‘26th May.’ This year has been designated the ‘Year of Renaissance.’ It will be devoted to the rebirth and the renewal of the promise of economic Independence and resilience.”
The President further explained that “Our task today is to complete our mission by securing within the next decade, a ‘good life’ for all Guyanese. The necessity of economic transformation cannot be denied or delayed.”
The Ministry of the Presidency calls on Kaieteur News to immediately remove the misleading statement.
