Just before 13.00 hours yesterday the residents of Costello Housing Scheme went into panic mode as they heard thuds on their rooftops.
When they looked outside they saw live electrical wires dangling near their homes. It turned out that an excavator operator was digging the Sussex Street canal and this operation had caused some utility poles to lean.
This publication understands that upon seeing the posts leaning and wires landing on the roof tops, the driver of the dragline abandoned his work and ran away.
The residents say they are happy that the canal is getting some much needed attention but are calling for more care to be taken to prevent damage to their homes and possible injury.
Several residents also complained of their telephones going dead as a result of the lines being destroyed.
