A Lodge Nursery School student died at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC) around 05:00 hrs yesterday, two days after she and her father were involved in an accident on Mandela Avenue, Georgetown.
The four-year-old child has been identified as Paula Waterman of 53 Norton Street, Lodge. Waterman died in the medical institution’s Intensive Care Unit where she had been battling for her life on a life support machine since Tuesday.
Her father, Paul Waterman, is also hospitalized at the GPHC.
When this newspaper visited him, he was not in a position to speak. Up to late yesterday, he was not aware that his daughter had died.
According to information received, the child’s father had just picked her up from school and was heading to a canteen to purchase food when his motorcycle suffered a ‘blowout.’
This caused the older Waterman to lose control of his vehicle and slam into a utility pole. The child was flung about 10 feet away from the point of impact, while her father collapsed nearby.
Kaieteur News was told that the duo was rushed to the GPHC by public-spirited persons. The child’s relatives were reluctant to provide information to the media since the older Waterman was still hospitalised and he had no idea his daughter had passed away.
