Dear Editor,
There can be no denying that a FREE media is essential to Democracy in Guyana. A free media provides for a free flow of information and an exchange of ideas. However, in Guyana it can be seen that the Media has been behaviour conditioned such that some media outlets feels obligated to suppor tthe Government and some media outlets feels obligated to support the Opposition.
This has happen through a variety of means such as money, bullying, legislation, etc. A free media is important. But what is also essential is an impartial media. An impartial media does not in anyway feel obligated to support the efforts of the Government or Opposition. It will hold both the Government and Opposition Accountable. After all, what is the use of a free media when self-censorship is practised? Just as important as being free and impartial, the media should also seek to honestly communicate with society building trust as it does so. It is evident that Democratic Behaviour of the media in media controlled society is less evident than in free/open media society. Democratic Behaviour is evident in free media societies. When you, as media operatives, feels obligated to take either the Government or Opposition side (justifiable so or not) as oppose to remaining impartial, then ask yourselves if your have been behaviour conditioned to do so? WHY take sides? Why not hold them both accountable?
