In an unprecedented occurrence on the East Coast of Demerara two teams from the same club reached an East Coast Cricket Board (ECCB) final and when the dust had settled at the Better Hope ground, the club’s ‘B’ team had registered an upset win over their ‘A’ team counterparts in yesterday’s final of the Elizabeth Styles 40-over first division cricket competition.
Left-arm pacer Azim Mohamed tormented the ‘A’ team batsman to finish with 4-19 from eight impressive overs on a flat track as the ‘A’ team were dismissed for 160 in 31.1 overs despite a fighting 33 from Man-of-the-Match Jayadev Mana.
Twenty-eight year-old left-hander Chris Deonarine hit an attractive 54 but only Ricknauth Rooplall of the other batsmen reached double figures as Mana returned with the ball to bag 3-24. He got support from Daniel Kowlessar (3-23) and Sachin Singh (2-29) to send the ‘A’ team packing for 121 in 28-4 overs.
A good sized gathering watched Better Hope ‘A’ opt to bat in sweltering heat in agriculture settings and Sachin Singh bowled Ravi Singh (1) at 6-1 before Rooplall was sent back by Singh at 34-2 after he had thumped four fours and a six in a cameo 24.
Suresh Budhan (1) was forced to retire hurt two runs later before Kowlessar ripped out Wayne Narine (3) and Mohamed (0) as the ‘A’ team slumped to 59-4 as two wickets tumbled in the same over.
Denish Mangal (9) joined Deonarine, who pulled Sachin Singh brutally for four and was playing with plenty of authority but Mangal was soon removed by Mana at 81-5 as pulsating music blared from the sound system at the venue.
Deonarine, who played several audacious shots and beginning to flow, was joined by Imran Khan and together they pushed the score to 101 with a 20-run stand, but Khan was reluctant to run and took most of the strike putting the pressure on Deonarine, who seemed to lose his rhythm and spent eight overs in the 40s.
Khan, who blocked five balls before getting a single off the last one for four consecutive overs, was eventually well caught, low down at short mid-wicket off Kevin Rampersaud for 10 at 101-6 at which time Budhan returned.
Deonarine, arguable Better Hope’s most accomplished batsman, pulled Mana through mid-wicket and slapped him behind point for consecutive boundaries before a four took him to his second 50 in the tournament after he had scored 95 against Buxton ‘B’ at Better Hope.
But when he was LBW to Kowlessar for 54 decorated with seven fours and a six, his team was in a deep hole at 117-7 and Mana struck twice at 120 to effectively finish the contest.
Earlier, Kowlessar was run out for a duck at 10-1, while Mohamed got rid of Roy Persaud (22) and Amir Khan (6) before Rampersaud (10) was stumped off of Khan to leave the score on 44-4.
Mana and Rajendra Dhanraj took the score to 71 before Dhanraj (22) was run out and when Mustafa Azzimullau was LBW without scoring as the same score the ‘A’ were in the ascendency.
However, Mana found useful partners in Sachin Singh (23) and Skipper Clive Rampersaud, who stroked three fours and two sixes in a valuable 40 to revive the ‘B’ team’s fortunes.
When Mana was ninth out it was 147-9 before Rampersaud, who many felt batted too late, was last out as Ravi Singh (2-30) and Khan (2-34) supported Mohamed.
At the presentation Ceremony ECCB President Bissoon Singh said this was the fourth year of sponsorship from Elizabeth Styles, a USA based Cosmetic Company that will renew their sponsorship in what should be a bigger and better tournament.
“Elizabeth Styles is doing a wonderful job in supporting cricket not only on the East Coast but also in Berbice and today’s winner gets $350,000, while the Runner-up collected $50,000,” Singh informed.
Better Hope Sports Club President Jainarine Singh and ECCB executive Ray Barton also spoke after the match.
