The suspect in the brutal killing of a Corentyne man, which occurred just 10 minutes into the new year, has turned himself in to the police.
Moses Samuel, 55, a labourer of Lot 72 Grant 1780, Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice was wanted for the murder of Asif Hafeez, 24, a labourer of the same address.
The man turned himself in around 08:20 hrs at the Springlands Police Station, claiming that he was tired of hiding.
He has since confessed to killing the younger man.
Information is that on the day in question, the new year’s celebrations were just beginning to soak in when it was reported that Hafeez was stabbed to death following an altercation with Samuels.
According to reports, the now dead Hafeez and his wife lived on the upper flat of the two- storey building while Samuels, who is a relative of Hafeez’s wife, was dwelling in the lower flat. The situation started from a misunderstanding between Hafeez and his wife in the upper flat of the house.
According to information, Hafeez and his wife had just returned from an Old Year’s Night party next door when an argument erupted between them.
It is alleged that Samuels, who was downstairs, got involved and Hafeez reportedly promptly told him to “mind his own business”.
This infuriated the situation and the two men became involved in a heated argument. Hafeez reportedly went downstairs and an altercation began. Hafeez reportedly slapped Samuels, who, reportedly was under the influence of alcohol, grabbed a knife and stabbed Hafeez in the neck.
The injured man was picked up and taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival. After committing the act, the perpetrator walked out of the yard and went into hiding.
He is expected to be charged shortly.
