Twenty-seven-year-old Shalinie Bansupaul, a mother of three, is disgruntled at the slothfulness of police at Vigilance Police Station, who are investigating an accident that has left her ten year-old daughter incapacitated.
Bansupaul, a housewife of Lot 62 Eastville, Annandale Housing Scheme, East Coast Demerara, has been forced to seek justice for Tricia Bansupaul who is currently recovering from injuries sustained in an accident involving a Hilux vehicle on November 13, 2015.
The worried mother told this publication that on the day in question her daughter was on her way to buy chicken at a nearby shop, when the vehicle allegedly hit the child.
She stated she was in the veranda and saw the Hilux pickup moving along the roadway at a very fast pace. She heard the loud impact but did not see her daughter. She said that her neighbours informed her that her daughter had been in an accident.
“I ran out the house and saw my daughter lying on the road, her foot was broken and she was bleeding through her mouth; she wasn’t even moving”, said the concerned mother.
After the accident, nearby residents told the driver of the Hilux to pick up the little girl and carry her to the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC). There, doctors confirmed that Tricia’s right leg was broken below the knee down. However she was treated for her injuries and sent home with her leg in a cast.
Mrs Bansupaul further related that the driver, after dropping her daughter at the hospital, immediately left. She subsequently made a report at the Vigilance Police Station and noticed that updates were not being provided in a timely manner.
She related that every time she called the police station, she would be told that the driver is sick and has not made an appearance.
Most significantly, she said that the Police never marked out the spot of the accident, a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in such matters.
“I think he has connections. They are pushing us around. All they are doing is calling us now and then and telling us nothing of significance; they keep prolonging the process.”
She added that the family has never been compensated for the ordeal they had to endure.
