The Central Georgetown Police Youth Group will be hosting The Commander of ‘A’ Division-Rainforest Water 5-A-Side Futsal tournament at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall, beginning at 9 am on Saturday.
The tournament will be held during this month on Saturdays (9:00hrs-12:00hrs) and on Sundays (09:00hrs-16:00hrs). The tournament will commence with an immediate knockout phase because of the number of teams competing, according to the organisers.
Registered teams from Tiger Bay, Mocha, Alberttown/North Sophia, Albouystown, Grove, Central Georgetown, Yarrowkabra, Golden Grove/Diamond, Soesdyke/Timehri and Agricola, under the auspices of The Commander ‘A’ Division, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Clifton Hicken will be competing.
Thirty (30) teams have registered so far from the communities in ‘A’ Division, from which youth groups are operational, and the organisers are hoping to get another 20 teams in keeping with the Guyana’s 50th Independent Anniversary celebrations.
The tournament will be kept under the theme: “Revive! Rejuvenate! Represent! Feeding the Flames of Progress”.
Chairman of the Central Georgetown Youth Group, Colin Haynes noted that the Guyana Police Force and the youth group believe that physical health and sport play a positive role in youth development, including improved academic achievement and higher self-esteem.
Hicken, who is also Georgetown Football Association (GFA) President, has endorsed the tournament as the first at this age group (12-17yrs), hoping that the participants would move on to the senior levels of participation.
According to a release, Hicken noted that it is necessary for them to take the skills associated with the game back to the communities and encourage other young persons to play the game.
The release said that Director of Sport, Christopher Jones alluded to the fact that this year 2016, the National Sports Commission (NSC) is looking to focus more on youth initiatives such as this one. The Commission will be sponsoring the prizes for each category of the tournament.
