Final leg of MLS sponsored CFU Combine under way

Fort-de-France, Martinique – Players from Barbados, Bermuda, Dominica, Grenada, Guadeloupe, Martinique and St. Maarten are vying for selection to the MLS Combine in South Florida from January 8-13 at the third and final leg of the MLS-sponsored Caribbean Football Union Combine under way in Martinique.
At the opening meeting on Saturday last, CFU President Gordon Derrick delivered a charge to the hopefuls, telling them, “Don’t be afraid; play like you’ve never played before, as this could be the opportunity of a lifetime.”
One player, Jamaican midfielder Jorginho James, has so far been invited to the South Florida Combine after the first two legs held in St. Kitts and Curacao.
CFU General Secretary Neil Cochrane reminded the players still in the hunt that the MLS scout assigned to the CFU Combine, Ezra Hendrickson, and those at the Stateside combine are looking for excellence.
“The MLS is looking for playmakers. They want people who make something happen when they touch the ball,” Cochrane said. He was optimistic, telling the players to work hard so that at least three more players would earn selection, representing a doubling of the number that has advanced since the CFU Combine began. One player moved on in year one and two in the second year.
