Having recognized the daily pressure at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), to deal with the usually “out-of-control” crowd, Minister of Public Health, Dr. George Norton has announced that three hospitals will be upgraded.
This move, he said, will help with the “overcrowding problem” at the country’s main health facility in 2016, since these institutions will now have the necessary resources and advanced equipment to deal with health issues in various regions.
The hospitals which will be upgraded are Suddie Hospital, Region Two, Bartica Hospital in Region Seven and the West Demerara Regional Hospital, Region Three. The upgrade will be funded by the Indian Government through the Modernization of Primary Health Care System project.
This was disclosed yesterday at the Ministry’s end-of-year press conference at Brickdam, Georgetown.
It was disclosed that this project is in its final stage – the tendering process.
The Minister said that the ministry recently tendered for consultants to do a complete assessment on the three facilities.
Apart from the physical construction, the grant from the Indian Government will also cater for medical equipment that would be needed to take the hospitals where the ministry wants it to be in 2016.
“When this (upgrade) is done, those hospitals will be able to provide services to ease the burden at the GPHC,” Norton said.
Trevor Thomas, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Public Health said, “Those hospitals are part of a comprehensive programme to strengthen primary health care. In order for this to be done, we must first determine what level of service we want to provide at these hospitals.”
Kaieteur News understands that the upgrade includes restructuring and construction of theatres; modernized medical equipment, additional beds and establishment of a station for nurses at the various hospitals among other upgrades.
Earlier this year, the minister visited several hospitals and expressed his dissatisfaction with the way they were being operated, the state of their infrastructure and the non-availability of key medical equipment.
Among the hospitals the minister visited were the Bartica, Suddie and West Demerara Regional Hospitals.
The Minister had said that at the Suddie hospital, the operating theatre was not functioning due to sloppy work done by the contractor.
Several parts of the hospital’s roof were leaking and the electrical work at the building was poorly done.
Kaieteur News understands that maintenance will be completed on the West Demerara Regional Hospital’s outpatient facility, its laboratory and X-ray department and administrative building.
