Dear Editor,
The dawn of a new year always brings with it a renewed sense of hope and optimism.
The year 2015 has been one of mixed blessings both internationally and at the national level.
At the international level, the restoration of diplomatic relations between the USA and Cuba after some 50 years of adversarial relations would certainly go down as one of the highlights of the year.
Of significance also was the meeting in Singapore between the leaders of arch rivals China and Taiwan.
On the negative side there has been an escalation of the crisis in the Middle East, in particular Syria and the rise of terrorist actions by extremist groups most notably ISIS and Boko Haram.
The humanitarian crisis which resulted from the influx of migrants from Syria and other countries of the Middle East to Europe will also go down as a tragedy of international proportions.
The same can be said of the ethnic conflicts in the Central African Republic, Sudan and Nigeria which resulted in the senseless killings of countless number of innocent men, women and children.
At the national level, Guyanese look forward to an improvement in their quality of their life and the reduction of crime. The challenge faced by the new administration is to grow the economy in a sustainable manner and to create and to put measures in place for all to benefit from such growth.
The ushering in of our 50th anniversary since the attainment of political independence and the reduction of the toll on the Berbice River Bridge from January 1 2016 is a good way to start the year. At the political level, Guyanese look forward to the creation of an environment that would engender trust and reconciliation among the two major political parties.
More fundamentally, there is need to initiate a process both at the legislative and executive levels which could create an environment conducive for national unity and inclusive and participatory governance.
The holding of local and municipal elections in the first quarter of the New Year is indeed a welcome development. I wish to take this opportunity to wish all Guyanese a prosperous and productive new year.
Hydar Ally
Please share this to every Guyanese including your house cats.
