The Net Rockers were able to put away opponents Hi Stars, after a 1-1 knotted scores when regulation
and extra periods of play were completed, 4-2 on penalties, while Net Rockers turned back the challenge of Botofago with a 4-0 drubbing on Sunday night at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground as the Upper Demerara GT Beer knockout football championship continued.
The game was played after some amount of rain soaked the outfield earlier, and during the night’s proceedings, but it did not deter the fair sized crowd from turning up to watch two exciting games.
Net Rockers started well when in the 21st minute the outside left winger Culrick Beckles motored past his defenders and collected the ball within the 6 yards box where he scored for a 1-0 lead.
The first half would end with the scores still 1-0 for the Rockers, but Hi Stars cancelled out that advantage through a strike by Jermain Adams when he scored ten minutes after play had resumed, as he out manoeuvred his markers in receiving a long pass, and controlled it before netting the equalizer.
With the scores level at 1-1 the two sides tried desperately to gain the initiative which never came. The end of regulation and extra periods of play failed to break the deadlock. This forced the game to go to penalty kicks where the Rockers would out score the Stars by a 4-2 score-line.
The second match of the evening between Amelia’s Ward Panthers and Botofago soon swung in favour of the Panthers who knocked in their first goal in the 31st minute through Kevin Plowell who converted a penalty. This came after John Handel was fouled in the 6 yards box on his way to the goalmouth in the 33rd minute for a 1-0 score.
However, after two minutes had elapsed the scores would increase for the Panthers to gain a 2-0 lead when Ray Bobbsemple collected a through ball from Jevon Babb which he scored.
That lead would be enhanced by another which came in the 74th minute through Marlon Simon who uncorked a drive from about 25 yards out that caught the Botofago goalkeeper and defenders and soared to the left side corner to score.
The game would be placed beyond the Botofago team when in the 82nd minute Jevon Babb would add his name on the scorer-sheet when his header from on top the 6 yard box scored from a left side cross from Ray Bobbsemple made it a 4-0 lead.
Amelia’s Ward Panthers are to face reigning champions Winners Connection in the first game at 6:15pm on Sunday when the tournament continues, while the second contest will bring together Net Rockers against Milerock at 8:15pm.
